I was always interested in working within the electricity industry and after seeing an article in the local newspaper advertising for apprentices then I knew that this would be a great opportunity to get training, gain qualifications and begin a career within my chosen field.
Working as part of WPD Telecoms, I am responsible for the up keep and day to day running of the SCADA network as part of the West Midlands team. I carry out maintenance and installations of plant and equipment that is used to provide an interface for the control centre and equipment that makes up the network.
I also help to maintain the PMR (Private Mobile Radio) and unlicensed radio networks’ that are used for automated switching and communications within Western Power.
I undertake standby duties and have to attend a range of faults that may include loss of communications on the microwave and unlicensed radio networks and also failure of visionary equipment in the substations and failure of equipment that is integral as part of the protection schemes on WPD’s electrical network.
The team that I work in. Every day is different. I’m almost certain to face a new challenge daily and I am fortunate enough to work as part of a team that all look out for one another. If I get stuck then there is always someone at the end of the telephone willing to help me out.
Within WPD Telecoms, there is a good work ethic.
To achieve this we demonstrate good teamwork, respect for another, fairness and trust.
We have a meaning and purpose and our team all pull the same direction.
It’s important to build up good relationships with work colleagues, show that you are willing to learn and be open-minded.
If you demonstrate a positive attitude then it doesn’t go unnoticed.
I find that if you are willing to go out of your way to help people then you will get the same in return.
I’m a firm believer that you make your own luck. If you want to learn then training will always be given. If you want to progress, then there will be opportunities within the business and if you set out to achieve a goal then it’s important to push for it even if you don’t necessarily follow the path that you first intended. The great thing about an industry like this is that there are many different sections that make up the business. You will always get out of it what you put in.
Completing my apprenticeship, being made up to a craftsperson and achieving numerous qualifications have all contributed but my biggest achievement is gaining a position within the WPD Telecoms team.
After spending 9 years as an electrical fitter, I managed to get a positon within the WPD Telecoms team.
It felt as though I was starting all over again and to begin with I found myself thinking I would never get the hang of it.
But through the time and support given to me by my manager and colleagues of whom I feel that I have built up good relationships with, I have gained confidence performing my current role and feel as though every day I am able to perform better at my job.
If you get a job here then you will unlikely ever want to work anywhere else. There are that many different roles and varied skills to learn.
If you put the time and effort in then you can enjoy a fulfilling, lifelong career and never get bored.
