I knew that Western Power was the leading name in the electricity distribution market and wanted a new challenge. I had friends that worked for the company and I knew it was a great career opportunity.
I work as a Craft Attendant. In a morning we’ll come into the yard and make sure that the van is fully stocked up before on going on the jobs we’ve been given for the day. My role on site is to make sure the risk assessments have been done, I have all the kit and tools ready to pass to the jointer and to keep us refreshed with tea and coffee along the way of course.
You make great mates whilst working here and everyone gets on really well which is great for team morale. We organize nights out and charity events to help in the local community as well.
It’s all about the team work and coming together to find solutions to the problems which we encounter regardless of their position within the company.
Someone who gets their head down and gets on with the job in hand. You’ll encounter many problems along the way but it’s all about coming together as a team to achieve your personal goals.
There are various career opportunities within the company and one I’m currently working towards is the adult apprenticeship to become a jointer which I’m looking to do in 2019.
My biggest achievement would be when I got the jointers mate job because I came from a team support role in the office and wanted to work out in the field and looking forward I want to be a jointer so this set me on the right path to do this.
I’d say the biggest challenge was driving 80 miles to and from work every day. Adding 4 hours in total to my working day. It was really draining at first but I knew if I stuck with it, it would be worth it, which it was. As I have now bought a house in very close proximity to work and gained many friends in work and in the local village I now live in.
I’d say definitely go for it, it’s a great company to work for and you’ll make great friends along the way. The job can be very rewarding and there are great benefits to be gained from the job as well.
