Meet Pauline

Read Pauline's interview to see what she thinks about working with us at Western Power Distribution.

I joined the Electricity Industry in 1985 as an Office Staff Trainee. I was aware, even then, that the Company looked after their staff and provided career opportunities.

I have a very varied role providing an ER support service to the business functions of WPD i.e. Logistics, Finance and Resources and External Affairs, looking after approximately 1000 staff.  No two days are the same!  I provide ER support to Managers and staff offering guidance and help within the business from recruitment to retirement.  A typical day may involve new appointments, Occupational Health referrals, sickness monitoring and general queries regarding working arrangements.

WPD really look after their staff.  We have excellent working conditions.

On a personal level the team I work with also make it a great place to work. Despite being a large employer we still maintain that ‘family’ feel to the Company.

Our culture is defined and practiced as detailed in our Company vision, goals and business style.  We are very safety orientated and take pride in our safety practices.  We look after our staff and customers to a high standard.

Any one of us can be successful here in whatever role we are carrying out.  It’s all about your attitude to getting your job done, being supportive to others and being part of a bigger team.

All of the above are available.  Learning and development can, quite often, be achieved within your own team but support and opportunities are extended to attend external courses and seminars if you feel that they would develop your role.  Likewise, with career progression, opportunities are there should you wish to enhance or change your career path.

Changing my career path to work in the ER team after 25 years of working within a different team. ER was an area of the business I had always been interested in and I felt that I could bring my experience of being a Manager to the role. I applied for the position last year and was successful in being appointed.

As above! Whilst it was one of my biggest achievements it has also been a challenge!  Having moved from my existing job, that I knew inside out, it was challenging to learn a new role (including with the systems and processes involved) whilst continuing to provide a good service to the business.  However, I have had great support from all of the ER team and my business managers to help me get to where I am today.

WPD is a really great Company to work for.  WPD care about their employees and certainly provide opportunities if you are willing to work for them.
