I started with SWEB in 1985.
As an overhead technician, I run the Lv D pole schemes - from planning, getting poles erected and planning and running shutdowns. I deal with faults, customer complaints and updating our databases.
The variety of work and establishing long working relationships/friends for life. Also there are great progression opportunities.
Our industry is very much a safety culture, which is essential to what we work with on a day to day basis, that’s not so say it’s boring by any means. We have great laughs and banter the same as any workplace, but there’s a time and place for it.
Someone who is safety conscious, driven, takes pride in what they do, treats people with respect and is hardworking.
Fantastic training, always jobs to apply for and courses to attend.
I started digging pole and joint holes by hand. I never thought I could become a craftsperson, but now I am a step further as a technician and that I achieved this year at 51 years of age.
Studying and working hard for a technician position which I was lucky enough to land on my second time applying.
I would highly recommend a career with Western Power; there are such a diverse number of career opportunities within the company, good pay, holidays and pension. If you are willing to learn, there are plenty of colleagues from many different areas of the business to help! We were all there once!
