I started my working life as an Administration Trainee back in 1989 (for MEB). My Dad said “you can’t go wrong with electricity, people will always need it”. He was right, nearly 30 years later I am still working for the same company (albeit a different name) and have enjoyed and am still enjoying every minute!
I am the Projects South Team Manager responsible for a team of 47 people who vary from Admin Support to Craftspeople to Engineers. My job is to keep the Team running as smoothly as possible by ensuring everyone is fulfilling their role safely, effectively and efficiently. As a team we manage and maintain over 130 Primary and Grid substations in the south of the West Midlands including the 132kV Overhead network.
Working with my Team and other WPD colleagues. Everyone is very supportive and committed to getting the job done.
We work in a potentially high risk environment but everyone is committed to working safely, keeping the lights on for our customers and going home safely at night.
I always say to new and current team members, “you’ll get out what you put in. If you work hard, do what you say you’re going to do, go over and above, you will become successful, get recognized and progress much quicker.”
WPD has a fantastic development programme for all our Trainees. You’ll get classroom and on-job training, you’ll be given a programme to follow and the best part is you’ll be surrounded by people who have had to follow a similar programme and can give you helpful advice and tips along the way.
Working my way up through the company, from being a Trainee to becoming a Team Manager.
Probably becoming a manager of some of the most experienced Craftspeople and Engineers in the company and not being one myself. I’d like to think I have been honest with my team about my engineering knowledge and if they concentrate on their strengths and I focus on the other areas and together we make a formidable team.
It’s one of the best companies you’ll work for, you’ll learn a skill for life and you’ll be part of the one most successful Distribution Network Operators in the UK.
