Geraint - Trainee Planning & Design Engineer, Swansea

I previously worked in a steel works where it had its own private network. The network was supplied by the company and this gave me an appreciation of the affect that it solely had on the steel works alone, which gave me a desire to work here. Also having family friends already here they had informed me of the great opportunities, benefits and job security.

My day to day role includes providing customer with a design and quotation for a new/upgraded connection(s).

The best thing about working here is the feeling of support from my manager and team should you desire to kick on and progress in your career path.

My biggest achievement to date is to be the first member of my training intake to complete my training program.

As part of my development I have been on a Planning and Design traineeship. This is a 2 year training program set up with 6 technical courses and a number of placements. The courses are set out to help you progress with the company. I joined as a grade 3 and by completing the training you can achieve a grade 4, followed by a grade 5 at the end. Completion of the training courses sets you up with the knowledge to go on to apply for grade 6/7 roles should you apply yourself.

The biggest challenge I have experienced in here is the steep learning curve at the start of my training when I had to learn about all the different standards. To overcome the challenge I had to seek help of the colleagues in my team who took the time explain everything to me. This really helped me settle into my new role.
